Take Action Queen’s is an AMS ratified club that serves to create  social change through building youth leadership. Next year, we will be looking to expand into local Kingston high schools, where we will mentor young students to help them create projects and initiatives that have social impact. It is a very exciting opportunity to get involved!

Take Action Day 2012 may be over, but the spirit of helping others can always be maintained.

You are awesome, pass it on!

At Queen’s University on February 16th, we will be distributing cards in the morning that will help us track how a small act of kindness is passed on. The card will have several spaces for you to jot down your name, the act, as well as the location. Pass on the card to the next person to whom you perform a small act of kindness to, be it your friend or a complete stranger. Bring back the cards to the drop off spots at the end of the day, and we will be able to map down how far your small act of kindness has gone! Please stay tuned for the pick up and drop off locations!

We are still accepting volunteers to help out in the preparation and execution of the event. If you are interested, please email us for more information.

TakeAction! ran a successful holiday food drive, with proceeds going to the Ryandale Food Shelter in Kingston. Thank you for everyone who volunteered their time and made contributions!

We also completed a Holiday Hampers event in conjunction with the Salvation Army. A holiday hamper with essential items for the holidays was delivered to a family in need in Kingston.

The mentorship initiative that begun in the first semester is continuing into the second semester. We will be going into local schools to present on various topics to promote the students to TakeAction! in their own communities.

As the first semester has drawn to a close, we are looking forward to the new semester with new hope and plans. We have many exciting new endeavours planned for the upcoming semester. Please stay tuned for more information, and find out how you can TakeAction!

Queen’s TakeAction! was at Run for the Cure in Kingston today! Run for the Cure is a Canada wide event organized by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to raise money towards breast cancer research.

Thanks for everyone who came out to volunteer to help out a great cause. Everyone’s involvement was much needed and appreciated.

Our FIRST GENERAL MEETING of the year is scheduled for WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21st at 7PM in BIOSCIENCES 1120.

We will be going over some events we have planned for this year, as well as looking for YOUR ideas for any new initiatives you would like to see Take Action! partake in. We are also looking to hire a FROSH REP.

This year, we plan on making our group bigger and better. We have many great initiatives planned around our central ideology of Leadership Development, Mentorship, and Volunteersim. Of course, we are also looking for YOUR input on new ideas and initiatives that YOU would want to do this year at Take Action! We are all about working together in a cohesive group where everyone can contribute. There are many leadership opportunities available, as well as volunteering events that everyone can partake in.

Take Action! Queen’s

If you’re interested in GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT, you should learn about Microfinance! On Thursday, March 10, and Sunday, March 13, Queen’s students will have the opportunity to learn more about this intriguing subject.

So what is microfinance? Microfinance is a relatively new method of aiding the developing world through the provision of small loans to those in poverty. These institutions allow starving entrepreneurs to make a living while maintaining over 90% repayment rates! It has been hailed as one of the first truly sustainable approaches to eradicating poverty.

On Thursday, March 10, at 7:30 pm, Sheila Arnopoulos will be giving a talk about microfinance in DUNNING 12. Ms. Arnopoulos is a renowned journalist who has worked in microfinance in India and has written a book about her experiences.

On Sunday, March 13, at 2:30pm an interactive workshop on the subject will be held at CHERNOFF 213. Andrew Macdonald, from Opportunity International (a microenterprise development institution) will be leading this event.

Both events are pay-what-you-can, and promise to teach you more about this sustainable method of helping the poor.
